Closer Look at the Services

Particle size analysis and particle counting (concentration):

The analysis of particulate samples is performed to define the particle size and distribution from a representative sample. Particle counting (number of particles with some physical characteristics in a unit volume of liquid or air) is reported as the result of either the total number of particles within the chosen lower and upper size boundaries or a particle size distribution with absolute count at each size bin.

Method Development and Validation:

IST provides a comprehensive quality assurance system  which is an essential component for analytical laboratories.  The validation services include performing tests designed to demonstrate that an analytical test system is suitable for its intended purpose and is capable of providing accurate and reproducible analytical data.  Method validation is required for 1) introduction of new methods to routine use, 2) implementation of changes to an existing method (e.g., an instrument with different characteristics or samples with a different matrix), and/or 3) changes to original intended use or scope of an existing method.

Performance Qualification (PQ):

Verifies compliance with all performance requirements specified in the User Requirements Specification (URS) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).  The PQ includes tests designed to verify the satisfactory performance of the equipment or system that commences after the Installation Qualification (IQ) and Operational Qualification (OQ) have been completed successfully.

Laser diffraction:

The laser diffraction particle size analyzer utilizes the Fraunhofer and Mie theories of light scattering.  For particles larger than 100 µm in diameter, the Fraunhofer model will produce results almost identical to those obtained with an optical model generated for the material and fluid. The Mie theory describes the interaction of light with a particle of arbitrary size as a function of angle, given that the wavelength and polarization of the light are known and that the particle is smooth, spherical, homogeneous, and of known refractive index for both the particles and the suspension fluid.

Coulter Principle

The Coulter Principle: the reference method for particle sizing.

The reference technology for counting and sizing particles using impedance measurements. Particles suspended in a weak electrolyte solution are drawn through a small aperture, the “sensing zone”, through which an electric current flows.  As each particle passes through the sensing zone, it displaces its own volume of conducting liquid and increases the electrical impedance in proportion to its size.  An amplifier converts the current fluctuation into a voltage pulse large enough to measure accurately.  According to the Coulter Principle, the amplitude of this pulse is proportional to the size of the particle traversing the orifice. Particles as small as 0.4 µm and as large as 1200 µm in diameter can routinely be measured.
